Testing testing; check one two – DWT is live once again on Reddit!
Terrific, terrific stuff
Alas – promotion has remained minimal; no wonder to be fair - after last weeks effort, it was perhaps best to bury the head in the books and say nowt. No stranger the feeling of failure alas - a fact never far away from the overall discussion up to now. Never more sought after, determination and eagerness in equal measure, spilling over the rim of the hope cup. All we need is one big sip - the cup clutched with confident steady hands, avoiding spillage. The sweet nectar flowing down the gullet into the excited belly awaiting below.
Away from the despair of DWT, life I'm pleased to say, has been fucking terrific this week. Never far away from an ambience of terrific as you all know, given my overbearingly positive methodology - it was a fucking wondrous departure away from the oft felt deflation punctuating the path throughout. The long game is one I do not oft muse over if I'm honest - often trapped in the bubble of a clutch of months at a time; thats what you deal with, when abandon and recklessness litters the timeframe. But here - its only abandon and recklessness when the tactics have proved costly; swap out deflation for elation and suddenly abandon and recklessness becomes visionarism and bravery. The Dad ethos hasnae changed; just finally the right folks have sat up, taken note and waited patiently for Dad to realise his path leads via their terrific assistance.
As a result of this new found journey, I have admittedly been a smidge emotional and reminiscent of times gone by...halcyon days are evident in everyones pysche regardless of the quality of the halcyon - its the presence of the fondness that ekes away at the hope you have for whats to come. will days ever be that pure again? Finally after a lot of years, there is a shape forming in the clouds one can gaze at and draw warmth from. The formation of a tear in the eye, only acts as a humbling reminder that things are finally heading towards a figurative warm comfortable bosom. I've almost forgotten what that feeling of trust is like to be honest - the guards have manned the gates of my soul for much much too long...barely a spirit allowed to wander through since the days of halcyon. With it, enters a new suave, easy-going Dad - a Dad who remains as blindly naive as ever, just with a whole new layer of trustful knowing, that things will be ok. Really takes the tightness out the shoulders by golly - hoo mama haha
For those keeping track - last week saw a consolidation of the recent terrible pish; zero return 3 of the last 4 - this after a real sense of corner-turning after profit (albeit a smidge) coming back from DWTs 11, 13, 14 & 16. There was a sense the franchise was finally proving to be what I'd invisioned: a Ship on which one could slip a small amount of investment into, which she would re-invest, build a solid base from which to leap high, and yield harvest after harvest; all of varying sizes, with the odd one bringing home a basket brimming full of nourishment. Once achieved - the experimental side could thus be pushed on - really playing with the boundaries of prediction on a whole new level. Still alas we find ourselves seeking that formula...the bottom of the fund barrel now starting to become visible. Triple figures the negative return now finds itself in evidence - seems not too long ago that scenario would never be thought to become a reality. Perhaps the shot in the arm we need - a wee scurvy pill for one and all; lets take the suffering seriously. So to wrap up - a wee pill down the hatch, the release the latch - this time we head to a patch, where we find a batch. Reddit Running Total (RRT) currently sits at -£102.69. Ah no.

I’m not promoting it in the slightest to be put on; it's purely to be completely transparent about where the beans I'm spilling are being pushed towards – this is after all, a Life Experiment: Can a useless old arsehole prosper under strict weekly gambling conditions? Word of warning; prior to this – not really.
The sticky clarifies - but just to reiterate - here's the format...DRS20 is Dads Recommended Spend: £20. This is a lot of money granted - and I would encourage absolute apprehension if this sort of money represents life altering for you personally if zero is returned. I’m lucky enough to be able to afford to lose £20 in a week; but confess that if I got no return for say, 20 weeks in a row - I would likely be without something I value (a streaming service or summat). I don’t take it lightly. Four bets are placed with this outlay; a £5 Treble (DWT) and three £5 Doubles. Generally if two come up, the bet is covered (up or down £2 or so). My gambling prowess is pretty much a joke; so whilst I advertise, I in no way qualify them as a given. I’m a prick with plenty bollocks to spout is all. This is how I frame it.

So here it is - the one that celebrates its first week as a man with hairy chest and toes by solidly standing tall with a wager of defiant flippancy:

Its DWT19
https://i.redd.it/p0wiies7kuq51.gif

Huddersfield Town (away to rotherham): 11/5
Queens Park Rangers (away to sheffield wednesday): 13/5
Mansfield Town (away to newport county): 2/1

33.56/1 we get for this selection – terrific.

Over 30's last week; over 33's this week - up here in the fluffy clouds we may take a dunt or two; but there is no doubting our ability to float with the flow. Whilst haemorrhaging funds like there is no the morrow, I still remain defiant - whilst tough to isolate, combinations of the improbable exist every fucking week in the gambling; its my - and many many terrific pricks like me - semi-defining moment when producive of the numbers thrown into the mix for that sugary sweet combination of chewy fudgey delightfulness 😎

Huddersfield Town managed to finally arrest a dirty wee slump there last time out with a win over Forest (by fuck they are doing shit - hoo mama). Its worth a check of the fixtures they've played out over the last couple - Brentford and Norwich; both stalwarts of true definition. They're no travelling to the fucking Nou Camp haha A fortress it most certainly isnae (no wins in three at home).
Queens Park Rangers had a wee spell there where they actually began to look like they knew what they were doing; was so used to seeing them be another team who you took note of because they were a regular top flight mob for a while. As unreliable as they get to be honest; random to the extreme in terms of form. But steady out the blocks they've been thus far - goals scored in all three fixtures; they're one defeat the odd goal in a five goal away thriller to Coventry. A real sense of balls outedness as such - certainly a mentality I have faith in, whilst considering the woes of opponents sheff wed; zero goals in three, two defeats on the trot. A broken machine they is hoo mama
Mansfield Town have been the recipient of my highest hopes this season; tipped as one of the league winners (albeit EW up to 4 places as a wee back up) by my good self. No exactly setting the heather on fire thus far - but a sturdy set of bastards nonetheless; a wee kickstart victory over newport the day is just the kind of corner turner we read about so often in the broadsheets (at least locally to Mansfield). Keep your eyes on them - thats all I'm saying.

So there we have it – nostalgia, hope and determination all apparent in equal measure. This time we do it right; wind in the sails – and off across the ocean in search of new worlds. A powerful pirate ship hunting high and low for treasures. Raise the fucking flag - the good ship DWT is back and ready to provide for its crew. If you play; play safe. DRS20 as always people.
Frustration at the amount won, is better than the heartache at the amount lost.

Blank/Double Gameweek Discussion & Analysis

So, the FA cup is done, it was an interesting weekend for football, if not for the FPL. Now that we're closing in on the fifth round, the legendary Blank Game week(s) are coming up, and I'm dangerously unqualified to analyse what happens next (so I'm going to do it anyway).

Gameweek 26 -

If you're saving your Triple Captain and your Bench Boost, there will be a blank gameweek in GW26 - teams that don't play in this fixture will have a double gameweek later in the season, and that week is likely to be the best time to play your Triple Captain

Who's involved:

Southampton play Man United on Sunday 26th of February in the final of the Football League Cup, so won't be available to play their Premier League game scheduled for this weekend.

Who's affected:

Southampton are due to play Arsenal, Man United are due to play Man City. These games are now guaranteed postponed, none of these teams have a Premier League game scheduled for GW26 (a Blank Game Week or BGW). For obvious reasons, try to make sure that you can field a team of 11 players whilst these teams are not playing.
Currently, these matches have not been rescheduled, but on the basis of previous seasons, these will be between GW32 - GW37. The most likely weeks are GW34 or 37, but these are not nailed on yet. Matches played in this week (a Double Game Week or DGW) will be counted into the TOTAL score, meaning a correct captaincy pick will make or break many of your seasons.
Gameweek Southampton Arsenal Man City Man United
26 Arsenal (H) Southampton (A) Man Utd (H) Man City (A)
32 West Brom (A) Crystal Palace (A) Hull (H) Sunderland (A)
33 Man City (H) Middlesbrough (A) Southampton (A) Chelsea (H)
34 Chelsea (A) Sunderland (H) West Brom (H) Burnley (A)
35 Hull (H) Spurs (A) Middlesbrough (A) Swansea (H)
36 Liverpool (A) Man Utd (H) Crystal Palace (H) Arsenal (A)
37 Middlesbrough (A) Stoke (A) Leicester (H) Spurs (A)

Ones to watch

With Southampton's back line in tatters following Fonte's departure and Van Dijk's recent injury, the team doesn't have much in the way of FPL assets. Long may be returning to form following his goal against Liverpool to put them through to the final, and Rodriguez is turning heads as a cheap 4th or 5th midfielder. Forster is playing well, but with Yoshida and Betrand standing in for the regular centre-backs, the Southampton penalty area isn't the Fort Knox that it was at the start of the season. In my opinion, Southampton don't have a strong captaincy pick, unless you fancy Forster against Arsenal and Chelsea or Middlesborough
Arsenal are playing well week to week, and it's little wonder that Cech, Koscielny, Bellerin and Sanchez are all amongst the highest selected players in their position. There have been concerns about Giroud's impact, particularly on Sanchez's striking potential, however Giroud has looked less convincing recently and Wenger needs a good finish to the season to keep his job. Expect big things from this team, and expect many managers to Captain Sanchez against Southampton and Sunderland/Stoke. Follow the crowd or pick a differential? Only time will tell, and I'll see you in the rant thread!
Man City have the players. They have the skill. They have Kun. What they don't seem to have recently is a solid team. Be careful when picking players here, Guardiola likes to rotate his squad, so it's entirely possible that any player you draft in to play for a City DGW won't play twice at all. Sterling, De Bruyne & Silva are playing well in midfield, and of course the legenday Aguero. Due to the rotation issue, picking a captain that is guaranteed to play a full 180 minutes is hard, but if you're picking a City player against West Brom/Leicester and Man United (never write off a derby, anything can happen), Aguero is the sort of player that can go on a rampage and score 7 goals in two games. This will either be an explosive performance or a failure to launch, but if it goes right City's lower ownership could help to close the gap.
Man United are also performing well, however with Man City and Spurs/Burnley in the space of a week, it could go very well or very badly. Pogba and Ibrahimovic are my picks for the United team due to their reliablity and week-to-week scoring potential, but fixtures make me wonder whether it's worth persuing them. Burnley have had a fantastic run at home, Spurs are still chasing the title and Man City are Man City. If you want a captain pick, go for Ibrahimovic, but this feels risky to me.

Gameweek 28 Blanks:

The FA Cup 5th round draw has been completed as of today (the 30th of January). Teams that play and win their 5th round match will play in the quarter final, which clashes with GW28. All of the Premiership teams involved have managed to avoid each other, meaning that if they all get past their opponents, it'll be a big double game week, and a Bench Boost could result in 15 players playing 180 minutes. Can you say ka-ching?
Currently there is no guarantee that any blanks will occur - although none of the 8 premiership have drawn each other, if all 8 winners of the 5th round are non-premiership teams, GW28 is a normal gameweek.

FA Cup 5th Round Matches

All FA Cup matches take place on the 18th of February at 3pm
Millwall v Derby/Leicester
Huddersfield Town v Manchester City
Wolves v Chelsea
Middlesbrough v Oxford United
Sutton United v Arsenal
Blackburn v Manchester United
Fulham v Spurs
Burnley v Lincoln

Games that may be affected:

Man City v Stoke (if Man City beat Huddersfield)
Crystal Palace v Spurs (if Spurs beat Fulham)
Middlesbrough v Sunderland (if Middlesbrough beat Oxford United)
Arsenal v Leicester (if Arsenal beat Sutton United OR if Leicester beat Derby in their replay on the 8th of February and also beat Millwall)
Southampton v Man Utd (if Man Utd beat Blackburn)
Liverpool v Burnley (if Burnley beat Lincoln)
Chelsea v Watford (if Chelsea beat Wolves)
As soon as betting odds are released, I will update this post, although it's fair to say that the premier league sides will be favoured to progress to the next round.

"Safe" fixtures for GW28:

Bournemouth v West Ham
Everton v West Brom
Hull v Swansea
None of these teams are in the 5th round, so they will all definitely play their GW28 matches. As the draw has kept all Premier league teams apart, we won't know anything more about blanks until then. Whilst it's possible to plan around betting odds, the FA cup is renowned for being unpredictable.
Betting odds should be out within the next week or so - I'll be teaming up with the TheFantasyPL guys (check out their latest team selection blog to pick through the players most likely to be affected and the best replacements to fill their boots during the Blanks.
I won't be keeping this post updated from here on out, but as always, if there are there any players you think need to be watched or avoided, feel free to discuss!

The Premier League 2018/2019 sack race

The Barclays is back boys, which means the managerial merry go round is about to hit the accelerator and kick into overdrive. This cruel fairground ride is bound to claim a fair share of victims over the course of the season, but who will be first? Last year Frank de Boer took home the gold in a record smashing 4(!) games; surely nobody will leave their club as fast as the Dutchman, but here’s my personal take on how each manager may fair this season.
AFC Bournemouth – Eddie Howe
Bournemouth are weird aren’t they. They’ve become somewhat of a Premier League mainstay, whilst maintaining the feeling of being a Championship side. I like them, they’re cool. Another cool thing is the man at the helm ‘future England manager,’ Eddie Howe.
He’s done an insanely fantastic job in getting his side to this stage and is a club legend for sure, even if the club struggle, I can’t see Howe being sacked. Stranger things have happened in football, such as Robert Green going to Chelsea, but Howe staying put seems inevitable.
Sack Race odds: 20/1 (All odds from SkyBet)
Arsenal – Unai Emery
It still doesn’t quite feel real to talk about Arsenal sans Arsene Wenger; he’s been the gunners’ leader for the entire span of my interest in football, but all good things must come to an end, and good things can be birthed from such endings, so in comes the Europa League specialist, Unai Emery.
Will he be sacked first? Almost certainly not, in fact, Emery seems like he is poised for success with the London club, with a host of important new signings and a proven philosophy. However, I can’t help but get flashbacks to when David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson. The burden was too large, Moyes drank from the poison chalice of management, causing his tactical brain to explode, and he never truly recovered. Hopefully for Unai, this chalice is slightly less poisonous and he can work some magic when stepping into Wenger’s shoes.
Sack Race odds: 33/1
Brighton and Hove Albion – Chris Hughton
What a lovely man Hughton is, he’s worked harder than anyone to make it in the Premier League. It wasn’t meant to be at Newcastle or Norwich, but little Chris has found his true love at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton sailed to a highly successful maiden season in the Premier League, and a vast amount of that credit has to go to Hughton. He changed things up by adding the likes of Schelotto over club legend Bruno, allowed Pascal Groß to work his magic feet and played to the strengths of Glenn Murray, who ended up bagging 11 league goals. Second season syndrome looms in the air, but if Hughton keeps it fresh again his love affair on the south coast will continue to blossom.
Sack Race odds: 16/1
Burnley – Sean Dyche
If the 2018/2019 managerial sack race is won by Sean Dyche, I’ll eat a worm. Dyche is everything that makes Burnley tick, he and the club are basically those two old fellas you see in the pub every night drinking dark mild, it’s an unbreakable bond.
Dyche is well aware of the club’s strengths, weaknesses and how to squeeze the best out of every fixture. The only issue rearing its ugly head is that of overachievement and squad depth; Europa League qualification was something nobody could have predicted for the claret side and people surely can’t expect Dyche and company to repeat the feat this year, especially with the extra burden of having to get his paper thin squad through a highly populated fixture list.
Sack Race odds: 20/1
Cardiff City – Neil Warnock
Neil Warnock is somehow not the favourite to depart his side quickest this season. Warnock has forever been the Premier League bridesmaid, but never the bride, as whilst he has a very impressive Championship record, he’s never cut the mustard in the top division.
He sits in the void between Premier League and Championship alongside the likes of Lewis Grabban, Dwight Gayle and Cameron Jerome, in that they’re all too good for the Championship but simply are not built for the trial and tribulations of the Premier League. Sadly for Warnock, his success will again be his own downfall.
Sack Race odds: 8/1
Chelsea – Maurizio Sarri
Sarriball is an interesting entity in football. It’ll entertain, it’ll win hearts and minds, but as of yet, it has failed to win a top level trophy. Will his stylish brand win one this year? I think not.
Whilst his tactics are excellent and his style is easy on the eye, it takes time to implement such a system, especially in an entirely new league. Undoubtedly Sarri needs a sufficient tenure to implement his intelligent plan, so sacking him before even giving him a hope of getting everything in place would be pure madness, even from a notoriously non-reactionary, cool headed fellow such as Roman Abramovich.
Sack Race odds: 33/1
Crystal Palace – Roy Hodgson
Roy the boy rides again! At the tender age of 70 (the oldest in the league) Hodgson enters his first full season with Crystal Palace after working wonders there last season. With De Boer at the wheel the club were on a highway to hell (a.k.a the Championship) but Hodgson steered them to safety and got everyone at Crystals nightclub grooving again.
He’s been there and done it all before so when it’s all said and done I wouldn’t be surprised to see Roy standing tall once again. Who knows, if he has an incredible showing, maybe he could be England manager one day…
Sack Race odds: 20/1
Everton – Marco Silva
I’ll save you the classic Paul Merson jokes, but Mr Silva has proven quite popular in the top division hasn’t he. Silva laid his roots at Hull, then started turning up trees with Watford, before proving to be a thorn in his own side after getting his head turned by the Ev in the winter.
Everton finally got their man and should he be able to get them playing like Watford early last season, they’ll be off to a flyer. The question mark however, is on the defensive side. Silva knows how to get his creative players into the game but his teams are often leakier than the Titanic, which doesn’t bode well for England’s world cup hero Jordan Pickford.
Sack Race odds: 18/1
Fulham – Slavisa Jokanovic
Are you a football hipster? Do you like walking down the river side to your favourite cereal café? Do you love nothing more than your team’s home ground to be an old hunting lodge? Well Fulham is the team for you and Slavisa Jokanovic might just be your new best friend.
Jokanovic has hauled his team back to the big time by having each and every one of his players invest in his brand of attractive, attacking football. Now with the likes of Mitrovic, Seri, Schurrle, Sessegnon and Cairney at the manager’s disposal we could be looking at the breakout team of the season and a influx of new Fulham fans from across the globe.
Sack Race odds: 20/1
Huddersfield Town – David Wagner
I mentioned second season syndrome before with Brighton, but the eerie stench smells much greater in regards to Huddersfield. They almost burnt out last year and despite signing some decent players (Kongolo permanently, Durm, Sobhi etc.) they are once again, a firm favourite for the drop.
The question that is begged then is this, will a bad season see Wagner be sacked in a bid to change the fortunes of the club? I would say possibly yes. Whilst before I did speak of the love towards Dyche and Howe from their clubs, in this world of money and power there is little room for loyalty in football anymore, and Wagner is a man I fear for if things begin to go south.
Sack Race odds: 16/1
Leicester City – Claude Puel
Tensions got nasty between Puel and Leicester last season. There were warm beginnings due to the removal of Craig Shakespeare, but if there’s two things Leicester fans do not like it’s, 1.) winning just three games in fourteen to end the season, and 2.) playing a boring style of football.
He’s certainly one of the favourites to win the sack race, despite his side being expected to finish around the middle of the table, so I would be extremely fearful for his head if Leicester don’t kick off well. After all, this is the board that sacked Ranieri after he pulled off the impossible dream.
Sack Race odds: 7/1
Liverpool – Jurgen Klopp
Despite Klopp being at the helm of Liverpool for less than three years, it just feels right that he’s there. Like hand in glove, bacon and egg, Northern Rail and cancelling trains; they just fit together.
They’ve signed better than any of their Premier League rivals and finally have the squad depth to mount a challenge on all fronts. Anything less than top 4 (maybe even 3) and a decent run in the Champion’s League would be a disappointment, but it seems written in the stars that Klopp will once again deliver what is expected from the Kop faithful.
Sack Race odds: 80/1
Manchester City – Pep Guardiola
City fans must be glad all over that they have Pep at the helm, at the City board surely feel the same. The blue half of Manchester exploded into life last season and performed to a level which many would say was the greatest showing in Premier League history.
Pep has the highest odds on winning the sack race, and rightly so, as this season they look to have even more firepower with Mahrez arriving, and further stability with Foden and Laporte vying for first team action. They’ll probably win the league again, just hopefully not at such a canter to make things interesting. For now though, his bald-fraudometer reading remains at zero.
Sack Race odds: 100/1
Manchester United – Jose Mourinho
From the bookies’ least fancied, to their most fancied; Jose Mourinho is on the brink of destruction at Manchester United it would seem. Mourinho’s that fella that you have in your five-a-side team who does some daft skill in his own half, loses it, you concede, but he never accepts that he’s in the wrong it up, and instead throws a paddy and blames everyone else.
He’s already fallen out with a plethora of people at Old Trafford including: Luke Shaw, Ed Woodward and even his own fans’ home support. Plus, with his reign at Chelsea ending in tears following a conspiracy and tirade against Eva Carneiro, we can expect some fireworks to fly during Mourinho press conferences this year, and further rifts between the man, the fans and the board will quite likely lead to Mourinho leaving the club before too long.
Sack Race odds: 5/1
Newcastle United – Rafa Benitez
Poor old Rafa. He’s always a gentleman and shouldn’t have to put up with the farcical nonsense that is Mike Ashley. He worked wonders keeping his paper thin side in the Premier League last season and he should have been rewarded with some impressive new recruits. Ashley being Ashley though (Newcastle haven’t broken their transfer record since signing Michael Owen in 2005) means that instead of quality new faces Benitez has been forced to search the bargain bins at Poundland yet again.
For all of the above, I personally believe Rafa will be the manager to leave his club first. He won’t be sacked, surely Mike Ashley isn’t that stupid, instead Rafa may well step down. The man is simply too wonderful a coach to put up with the endless idiocy he’s been served up in the North East, and instead he should seek healthier options elsewhere.
Sack Race odds: 8/1
Southampton – Mark Hughes
I fully ate my words last season, when Hughes took over at Southampton I thought they were doomed, but he actually did a decent job and kept them in the league thanks to a few tidy results. I can’t help but not like Hughes though, maybe it’s his arrogant personality, maybe it’s that he cares way too much about handshakes, who knows.
The Welshman’s issue this time round is the lack of new arrivals and the constant question of, where will the goals come from in this Southampton team? Will Charlie Austin be able to stay fit enough to kick it in the net? Wil the loan of Danny Ings be a success? Will Nathan Redmond finally be able to understand that you can run, kick and breathe all at once? Find out on this year’s edition of the Prem.
Sack Race odds: 12/1
Tottenham Hotspur – Mauricio Pochettino
First things first, Daniel Levy got a taste of his own medicine and completely fluffed this transfer window. After years of squeezing every penny out of teams to get a stellar deal, here’s a comprehensive list of Spurs’ 2018 summer signings: nobody.
Pochettino would be safe at Spurs regardless of league position, but this shambolic transfer window means that he will get even more leeway in what is expected to be a disappointing league season following years of success. Plus, with Real Madrid plucking Lopetegui over Pochettino recently too, I don’t see any reason why Poch would depart the new White Hart Lane in the near future.
Sack Race odds: 50/1
Watford – Javi Gracia
I actually had to Google ‘who is the Watford manager?’ only to be greeted with the completely forgettable answer of Javi Gracia. Outside of a 4-1 win against Chelsea, his run at the helm of the Hornets has had very little sting behind it, which likely will continue through 2018/2019.
Without a doubt Gracia will be relying on his defence in order to keep his team up, and salvage his own job. Last season their top scorer was Abdoulaye Doucouré (who I cannot believe wasn’t snapped up) with 7 goals, and their blunted strikeforce consists of a fat guy on £100,000 per week (Deeney), a fat guy with a poor injury history (Okaka) and a skinny guy who’s Premier League goal ratio is 1 in every 4.5 games (Gray).
Sack Race odds: 8/1
West Ham – Manuel Pellegrini
West Ham live in a constant state of insanity. Their board have consistently lied to the fans about plans, both on the pitch and in terms of the stadium change, leaving many long-time Hammers fans disgruntled with their beloved team.
Stability may have arrived in the backroom however, as experienced head Manuel Pellegrini, who must have rocks in his head to take this role, takes to the hot seat at the London Stadium. Pairing such a successful manager with a plethora of exciting signings: Wilshire, Yarmolenko, Anderson, Sanchez and Perez amongst others, means that West Ham should be able to secure an impressive finish this time round.
Sack Race odds: 18/1
Wolverhampton Wanderers – Nuno Espírito Santo
Rounding off our band of merry men we have another gentleman who may become a victim of his own success. Wolves are back in the big time after six years of absence, and they’ve gone super-size on their transfer dealings, assembling arguably the most luscious squad a promoted side has ever forged.
I question whether Nuno as the managerial nous required to cut it in the top division, and considering the fact that Wolves have gone all in this summer, they could end up searching for a more prestigious manager if a fast start escapes them. Fun fact though, Nuno was born in São Tomé and Príncipe, which is cool.
Sack Race odds: 18/1
There you have it then folks, the Premier League sack (or leave you club because of gross mismanagement) is on. My front runners have to be Warnock, Mourinho and Benitez, but I’d love to here who’s job you are fearful for this time round.

All of Europe is going to watch us, to analyse us, to kill us if we don't win, to say how good we are when we win and that experience is beautiful to me.
I am really impressed [with Monaco]. They are physically strong, the full-backs play like wingers, the wingers play like attacking midfielders and the strikers are fighters and in the box they are killers. They don't need too many chances to score goals. A complete team – the most successful team in Europe in terms of scoring goals.

We have changed a lot of players over the last three seasons and we're back in the last 16 again. That's great because it shows that despite all the changes we're still able to play at the top level. We have only two or three players left from the team that took on Arsenal a couple of years ago.
This is our 11th game, taking into account qualifying matches, and we always try to play the same way. These two teams love to play football and have technical players. The two coaching staffs work well. But in other respects we cannot compare, such as in the respective transfer budgets.

Team Preview: Bournemouth [Premier League 2017-18 - 12/20]

A.F.C. Bournemouth

by NineFeetUnderground

Welcome back to the Premier League Previews series, a series where a fan gives an overview of his team for your perusal, and I get an excuse to take pot-shots at other clubs. This will run until the eve of the Premier League, taking a look at each club in turn. Today we're popping our Bournemouth cherry with a trip to the south coast.
About

Last season

Things started fairly well, despite being narrowly robbed by West Ham and beaten by both Manchester sides our early skirmishes included beating a very strong Everton team 1-0 with a superb performance, smashing Hull 6-1 and a creditable 0-0 draw against a (usually) free scoring Spurs side.
Things started to go awry around christmas and our defence became a meme- consistently conceding three goals (at least) every game (in seven out of eight games between November and January). Despite this horrendous spell the period did contain two of our most memorable games- Beating Liverpool 4-3 after being 3-1 down (Thanks Karius!) and a rare tactical error from Howe allowing Arsenal to claw back a 3-0 defecit to draw 3-3.
Eddie Howe always pulls it around in March though, and after a spirited draw at Old Trafford which will forever be remembered for Mings vs Zlatan, we only lost 2 more games all year, to Chelsea and Tottenham. Given that by all accounts we have the 17th highest wage bill in the division 9th should be recognised as an enormous achievement and a testament to the faith Howe has in his attacking football.
To sum up, aside from an 11 game spell through xmas in January the side competed well and never really looked in trouble of relegation, so I’m going to get on my soapbox about Eddie Howe’s deplorable attitude to cup competitions. After previous seasons where Howe would have played the under 10’s team if he could, all of us Cherries knew what to expect- but Howe peaked this year with one of the worst cup performances in the history of the club, an insult to fans. Selecting one of the most bizarre squads ever which included winger Marc Pugh at right back and Lewis Grabban ludicrously used as a professional footballer (I'm so, so sorry Sunderland fans), the 3-0 to League 1 Milwall should be a sign to Howe that things need to improve this year, especially as we also went out to Preston in the EFL cup. It’s no insult to the teams who quite soundly beat us to say that Howe’s selection and attitude to the defeats was disappointing to all of Bournemouth’s supporters.

This Season

Whisper it quietly but for the first time since we came up I don’t expect we’ll be in trouble this year. My Dad always says ‘are there 3 worse sides in the division?’, and unless things change enormously between now and the end of the transfer window I think most fans would agree that on paper there are more than three. As a result I would be extremely surprised if we ended up going down. Having said that 46 was such a low number of points to finish in 9th position it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we matched or beat last season’s total but still finished in the bottom half. 13th is my best guess, but if everything clicks at the back and we stay injury free I don’t think we’ll be scared of many teams. Steve Cook basically is our defence, on his own, so you can dismiss all of the above positivity if he does get a long term injury. We’d immediately find ourselves in real trouble.
THINGS I WANT.
-To take a point from Manchester City. We’ve never even got close to looking competitive against them and they’ve smashed us 15-1 on aggregate over the 4 times we’ve played them.
-Finally beat Watford. We’ve now drawn four games in a row and six of the last seven, beating them only once. Given that their fans have this weird obsession with us I’d love to do the double over them this year, especially as me & Whiffers have a charity bet on who’ll finish higher.
-Finally, finally sort out the defence. Signing Ake and Begovic is a huge help, but tactics also contribute to our leaky back line.
-Dignified, and serious cup performances. (See above)

3 players to watch out for
Lewis Cook Everyone is saying 'why don't Bournemouth want Wilshere back' and the truth is, of course we would want him back- if we didn't have Lewis Cook. Whisper it quietly, but he looks like he has the potential to be even better. After recovering from a broken foot last year his performances at the back end of last season showed real talent, backed up by winning the U-20 world cup as captain. He needs to improve his pass completion in the final third and maintain posession a little more often but I have a feeling this will be a huge season for him.
Nathan Ake Signed for a club record £20M he gives Eddie Howe an interesting dilemma at the heart of defence. Club Captain Simon Francis has been starting here since we were promoted but he now looks like his best years are behind him at times. I've picked him as a player to watch not just because he's our record signing, but because it's going to be a big change to the dynamic at the heart of defence. Steve Cook, Charlie Daniels and Simon Francis have been playing as a unit since we were in the third tier. Will Ake cock it up or finally fix our "concede three goals per game" defensive frailties?
Dan Gosling Conclusive proof that if Eddie Howe is your manager it doesn't matter how poor your first touch is, as long as you run your absolute tits off you've got a job for life. Prepare for some comedy gold, energetic, error strewn performances. Inexplicably a fan's favourite but odds on to be bloody entertaining for all the wrong reasons on Match of the Day.
What the fans think
Thanks to /AFCBournemouth for their help.
How do you think this season will go?
I think the season will be good. I feel we have more depth than we have had in the past and should be able to compete strongly with anyone all season. I like to think that 8th is somewhere we can finish but there will be steady competitition for that spot. I believe we'll finish anywhere from 8th to 10th.
We will stay up again, but potentially a little lower in the standings and maybe a few less points as last year. For a team that can beat anyone and lose to anyone i think form is always going to be an issue. I hope that when we do struggle it's not for too long. After 2 good seasons I wouldn't want to find us in the relegation zone, young team may feel the pressure. On a more positive note, I think Eddie will want a cup run this year which I'm hoping will mean a quarter final in one of the cups.
Which player is going to be your star of the season and why?
Hard to say a star of the season because we're very much a team. Last seasons player of the year, steve cook, will be in with a big shout and if Defoe or king can get 15 goals so will they. Ake will be a dark horse too.
I think Lewis Cook is going to be a big star and I think Cook will get an England call up.
How do you think the team will line up?
---------------------Begovic--------------------
---S. Cook------Daniels---------Aké------------Mings/Cargill-----
----Ibe/Stanislas------Arter-----Cook------------Fraser-
------------------King--------------Defoe/Afobe----------------
Bench: Ibe/Stanislas, Mousset, Boruc, Defoe/Afobe, Mings/Cargill, Ramsdale(?). I can't predict the rest of the bench due to youth players such as Worthington and Surridge maybe wiggling their way in.
Ive got no big idea on how I think we'll line up. Defoe, king, ake, cook, Daniels, Arter are all nailed on but apart from then anyone could play. Stanislas will start too if he's not injured.

Wrap Up

by NickTM

Summary: A third consecutive season for the Cherries sees them strengthening their squad in all departments, but for how long can they continue to punch above their weight?
What to say: It's a whole new spiiiiine!
What you might end up saying: Who put Dan Gosling on technique training?!
Why to like them: Plucky underdogs. Jermain Defoe was well-liked before the Bradley Lowery story, but now is verging on footballing sweetheart terrain. Eddie Howe's a canny young manager with a rare eye for a tactical switch.
Why to dislike them: Despite playing decent enough stuff when on the ball, Bournemouth have no qualms about snippy rotational fouling which is enough to annoy anyone. Artur Boruc won't be starting, which means we won't get many comedy moments from the goalkeeper.
If the team was a Simpsons character, it would be: Ned Flanders. The upbeat nature of Bournemouth in general does tend to get a little grating.

Vote for where you think Bournemouth will finish here.

Huddersfield | Brighton | Newcastle | Watford | Burnley | Swansea | Crystal Palace | Stoke | Leicester | West Ham | West Brom

Leonardo Jardim
COACH & PLAYER LINKS
  • This is Guardiola's first duel with French opponents since his Barcelona side beat Olympique Lyonnais 6-3 on aggregate in the last 16 in 2009. As a player, he was in the Barcelona side that overcame Paris 1-0 in the 1997 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. He had helped Barcelona to home (2-0) and away (1-0) victories over Monaco in the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League group stage.
  • Leonardo Jardim's first encounter with English opposition came as coach of the SC Braga side that beat Birmingham City FC twice (3-1 a, 1-0 h) in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stage. The next season, as Olympiacos FC boss, he faced Arsenal in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage, losing 3-1 in London but winning 2-1 at home.
  • Yaya Touré was a Monaco player in 2006/07, making 27 Ligue 1 outings and scoring five goals.
  • Bacary Sagna faced Monaco five times with AJ Auxerre between 2004 and 2007 (W2 D2 L1).
  • João Moutinho was in the FC Porto team beaten 4-0 at City in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 on 22 February 2012. Fernando and Nicolás Otamendi also featured for Porto that night.
  • During his 2014/15 loan at Manchester United, Radamel Falcao figured as an 83rd-minute substitute in a 4-2 derby home win over City. On loan at Chelsea in 2015/16, the Colombian was a late replacement in a 3-0 loss at City.
  • Falcao struck Porto's winner in a 2-1 first-leg home success over Arsenal in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (agg 2-6). He hit a hat-trick against Chelsea for Club Atlético de Madrid in the 2012 UEFA Super Cup.
  • Djibril Sidibé made his home debut for France as a replacement for Sagna during a 4-1 FIFA World Cup qualifying win in October 2016.
  • Aleksandar Kolarov scored a free-kick goal for Serbia in a 1-1 friendly draw with France in Belgrade in 2014.

SCHOLES: UNITED NOT CONTENDERS

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes does not believe his former club have the quality to challenge Manchester City or Liverpool in the Premier League this season.
"When you look at Manchester City, possibly Liverpool, I don't think they [United] have the quality of those two teams at the minute. Liverpool have made some really good signings. United finished above them last season," said Scholes, speaking in Hong Kong.
"I just don't see United getting closer to City. City are a really good side, great manager, some great players, a way of playing that they all know about and Manchester United seem to be not too sure what's going on.
"You don't really know the team, you don't really know the players, you don't know how they're going to perform from one week to the next. So I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see them challenging for the league this year."

NEWCASTLE UPDATE…

Here’s the latest from Sky Sports News’ Richard Graves…
“It’s certainly never dull is it around Newcastle United, especially in the transfer window. You feel they are probably still in the market for another striker, despite bringing in Salomon Rondon on a season-long loan. They also need to strengthen in defence. Federico Fernandez, the Swansea City defender is certainly one name that has been linked with Newcastle. In terms of attacking options Liverpool striker Danny Ings is another name.”

"It will be interesting to see what Spurs do next, with Villa seemingly digging their heels in. They are saying Jack Grealish is not for sale.
"So do Spurs go back in with an improved offer and hope they can force Villa's hand going into TDD? Or do they look elsewhere?
"But Grealish seems to be the one they really seem focussed on and have been all summer..."

HIBS WON'T BE DISTRACTED BY MCGINN TRANSFER TALK

Efe Ambrose is confident Hibernian can brush off the loss of Scotland midfielder John McGinn and produce another memorable European performance against Molde.
McGinn was absent from training on Tuesday and Wednesday after going down to Birmingham for talks as Aston Villa battle Celtic for his signature.
"I don't think it's going to affect us," the former Celtic defender said. "We are a team, not an individual. We know it's been coming so we will just focus on the game, that's the most important thing for Hibs.
"We know if John is here he is a plus for the team, he is a good player. So we are without John but we are still here and we still have the quality of player to do well.
"So we focus on the game and leave John to deal with everything that is going on around him.
"We wish him well but in football players come and go so we are not going to be distracted by his transfer."

HIBS IN HYNDMAN LOAN TALKS

Hibernian are in talks with Bournemouth over the loan move for Emerson Hyndman, according to Sky sources.

16:35

EVERTON LATEST…

Here’s an update from Sky Sports News reporter Vinny O’Connor at Everton's Finch Farm training ground:
“It’s good news for Evertonians at the moment. This deal is close, very close. Bernard flew into Manchester airport earlier this afternoon.
"Not only was he met there by our camera, but he was also met by Everton’s player liaison officer as well. He made the short trip to Everton’s Finch Farm training ground. He arrived at around 4.15pm and he’s been in there ever since.
"He’s going through the formalities of a medical and they also have to go through the process of sorting out a work permit as well. No real problems are anticipated, certainly from the information we are getting at least. The way this is going to pan out it seems is that once this deal is signed and sealed the likelihood is that Everton will announce Bernard tomorrow, well into time of the 5pm deadline."

ALEXIS WANTS 'BIG SIGNINGS' AT UNITED

Alexis Sanchez says Man Utd must sign players of Arturo Vidal's calibre if the club are to compete for trophies this season.
"At United we have to sign big players, with experience," Sanchez told Sky Sports. "Barcelona just signed Arturo Vidal, who is a great player and my team-mate from Chile.
"He is an example of the type of players we need to sign in order to win trophies and compete at the highest level.
"From what I've seen in training, Fred is a player who always wants to get forward, he is always trying to get forward and from a personal point of view I think we'll be able to combine well and it will be good for my game."

MAN UTD WANT BOATENG ON LOAN

Man Utd are keen to bring Jerome Boateng to Old Trafford – but only on loan, rather than on a permanent basis, SSN understands.
Jose Mourinho still has the German international as his No 1 choice recruit – but privately behind the scenes at United there are fears over a permanent contract for a player with a chequered history of injuries.
Boateng, 29, suffered muscle and tendon injuries over the past three Bundesliga campaigns, missing 27 games in total since December 2016.
With one day left of the summer window, Mourinho is running out of time to find a new central defender. Privately, United believe Harry Maguire is not for sale at Leicester and as things stand, Yerry Mina’s chances coming to Old Trafford looks increasingly slim.
Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward has made funds available to Jose, but is determined not to pay over the odds in the current market.

"No, I am happy here at Chelsea. I just arrived a few months ago and am just starting to settle well,” Giroud told the Standard.

HUDDERSFIELD UPDATE

The Terriers are still on the hunt for one more face, having enjoyed a busy summer after securing their second season in the Premier League in May.
Reporter Tim Thornton told Sky Sports News: "Isaac Mbenza is the player in question, a winger from Montpellier. He scored 10 goals in the French first division and we revealed yesterday he was in talks, and we understand those talks are progressing well. Most of the money they received for Tom Ince we expected to be reinvested in Mbenza. It would be quite a significant deal for Huddersfield.

“Watford have made an offer for James Ward-Prowse, but we understand that a loan deal would not interest Southampton.
"If there are to be any players in, it is probable that they will look to strengthen their strike force. A player who has been linked in the past couple of days is Danny Welbeck, who may want to leave Arsenal because he faces a battle for a first-team place, but Welbeck's wages could may well be a major issue.
"Liverpool's Danny Ings has again been linked with the club, but I'm told Southampton are not in for him."

BRIGHTON UPDATE

Sky Sports News reporter Roger Clarke has the latest on Brighton’s potential Deadline Day business...
"Brighton have been active in this transfer window, but the indications are that they might still be in the market for a central defender. The one they've been linked with throughout the summer is Liam Moore at Reading, but they haven't quite matched the valuation, even with the player handing in a transfer request.
"Brighton could turn their attention elsewhere, with Dan Burn at Wigan very much on their radar as well as Jack O'Connell at Sheffield United. Although they're happy with the business they've done, there might still be some more on deadline day. We'll hear from Chris Hughton around 1.30pm so he might fill us in with more details then."

"There’s also still a lot of interest in Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Crystal Palace would like to take him on loan again. Quite a few clubs want to take Kurt Zouma on loan and young defender Jay Dasilva looks like he will be moving to Bristol City."

COURTOIS: AN UNHAPPY ENDING

New Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois took to Facebook to post his thanks to Chelsea fans last night, but soon took down the message because of the reaction - an unhappy departure from Stamford Bridge, it seems.

BEHIND THE SCENES ON DEADLINE DAY

Just how does Deadline Day work when you're a Sky Sports News reporter sent to report from a Premier League club? Michael Bridge explains from Crystal Palace...
08:06

NEWCASTLE: WILL ASHLEY SPLASH THE CASH?

Newcastle United's difficult summer has been well-documented, and even the loan arrival of Salomon Rondon hasn't papered over that following Rafa Benitez's comments recently. Could things improve with a good end to the transfer window?
Reporter Richard Gravestold Sky Sports News: "They’re light defensively, not least because they've lost Florian Lejeune for an extended period of time. In the short term, Rafa Benitiez needs to bolster his defence. One name linked overnight is the 22-year-old Brazilian defender from Barcelona Marlon Santos, possibly on a loan deal.
"He will have to get a work permit sorted, which could be tricky. There's other options that need looking at as well, with Rafa Benitez saying he ideally wants a left back and a No 10 before the window ends, but time is of the essence and whether he can get the players in that he wants at the price that's acceptable to Newcastle remains to be seen."
08:05

POSH SIGN TONEY

Peterborough United have signed Newcastle United forward Ivan Toney on a long-term deal for an undisclosed fee, the Sky Bet League One club have announced.

LIVERPOOL OUTGOINGS

More on Liverpool, where Danny Ings and Marko Grujic could be on their way out today. Simon Mignolet also has a chance of heading out.
Vinny O'Connor told Sky Sports News: "We are expecting outgoings at Liverpool. Grujic could potentially be going back to Cardiff on loan and there may be interest from Napoli for Simon Mignolet, but that doesn’t need to be done today. Chirivella has been linked with Celtic, Markovic could be moving to the continent and Origi and Ojo could leave as well.
"Danny Ings is expected to leave. He is looking for first-team football and Liverpool will let him leave. We understand there is interest from Crystal Palace, but there are a lot of reports of interest from Southampton. Our understanding is that there isn’t any interest at the moment and Southampton aren’t going in for him."
07:58

GRAYSON: BLACKPOOL JOB ‘VERY UNLIKELY’

Blackpool are looking for a new boss after Gary Bowyer left on Monday. It’s a club Simon Grayson knows very well as a former player and manager, and he was asked on Sky Sports News if he would be interested in a return.
He replied: “Not in this moment in time. I had a two-year deal at Bradford that I turned down in the summer, to take time out from the game.
“I’m enjoying the media stuff I’m doing at this moment, so I would say it’s very unlikely that I’ll be going to Blackpool.”
07:56

LIVERPOOL - FEKIR STILL A TARGET?

Vinny O'Connor told Sky Sports News where Liverpool sit in relation to the targets they've been chasing - Christian Pulisic and Nabil Fekir.
He said: "Fekir and Pulisic are two of the names that have been mentioned, but I have to say in all honesty Liverpool aren’t about to go back in for Fekir. That’s the information we’re getting at the minute.
"It also looks like there’s not a deal to be done to see Pulisic become a Liverpool player. However, we are used to seeing surprises sprung on Deadline Day."

WOLVES UPDATE

Our reporter at Molineux, Kirsty Edwards, has provided this update on Premier League new-boys Wolves.
She told Sky Sports News: “It’s been a pretty busy summer for Wolves, and we expect more business today.
“Leander Dendoncker from Anderlecht is very much expected to sign here today and we’re expecting the move to go through barring any last-minute complications.
“Another one in the pipeline is Oleksandr Zinchenko, this one has been rumbling on for a while and Manchester City are willing to let him go for £16m but the player is reluctant to leave the Premier League champions.
“Wolves will try to persuade him today, and it seem he is surplus to requirements at City. It’s certainly one to keep an eye on.”

BOURNEMOUTH STILL ON HUNT

Bournemouth are still on the look-out for new signings, reporter Mark McAdam told Sky Sports News - but will Eddie Howe get his men?
McAdam said: “Bournemouth smashed their transfer record with the signing of Jefferson Lerma, but what will the club do today? We know in the past Eddie Howe is no stranger when it comes to making deadline day signings.
“The club are actively still looking to recruit, they are looking for a centre-back or a striker. As things stand, they are no closer to bringing anyone in, but they haven’t shut up shop as far as this transfer window is concerned.
“One of the big questions though is who is going to be leaving the club? There’s speculation about Jack Simpson, and there are two or three clubs interested in central midfielder Harry Arter. As things stand, there’s been no significant movement.”
07:38

'CLUBS WILL BE KEEN ON ROSE'

Simon Grayson is surprised Tottenham could be willing to let Danny Rose leave and expects more interest in the full-back.

MAGUIRE OR BOATENG?

Now Yerry Mina is off the cards following his move to Everton (see 8.20), there's some new updates on their pursuit of Jerome Boateng and Toby Alderweireld.
Sky Sports News understands the Manchester United board would prefer to sign Maguire, although Leicester have made clear he is not for sale - while Jose Mourinho would prefer Bayern Munich's Boateng.
07:37

CARDIFF CLOSE ON CAMARASA

Cardiff are working on a loan deal for Real Betis midfield Victor Camarasa, Sky Sports News understands.
Camarasa can play all positions in midfield but is most effective at No 8 or No 10.
The 24-year-old Spanaird did not feature in Betis recent friendly last Saturday.

Batshuayi has decided to leave Chelsea this summer and wants to move to Valencia, who are keen to sign him on loan.
The 24-year-old Belgium international has also attracted interest from Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund, where he spent the second half of last season on loan.

DEMBELE STAYING PUT?

Reported Arsenal target Ousmane Dembele says he is staying at Barcelona this summer.
The France international, who joined Barca in a big-money move from Borussia Dortmund last summer, had a mixed first season at the Camp Nou and has seen competition for places increase even further following the arrival of Malcom from Bordeaux.
Dembele has been tipped to move away this summer, with Arsenal touted as a suitor, but he has revealed he intends to remain at the La Liga champions.
Speaking during a live chat on Twitch, he said: “Yes, I'm going to stay - and I'm ready for the Spanish Super Cup match against Sevilla.”
06:45

ANOTHER ONE AT ARSENAL?

Gail Davis has provided this update on Arsenal’s potential Deadline Day business.
She told Sky Sports News: “Arsenal have done the bulk of their business early. Unai Emery has said he wants to bring in at least one more player, and that is likely to be a defender. They’ve got Laurent Koscielny out injured until December, so they’re a little bit short there...”
06:40

BELLAMY: UNITED ARE DESPERATE

Speaking on last night’s episode of The Debate, Craig Bellamy criticised Manchester United’s fruitless search for defensive reinforcements.
“They’ve got themselves into a position now where they are desperate. They need to get a centre-back in,” he said.
“They seem every unsure of the players he has brought in before in Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof. He isn’t convinced by them.
“I just don’t know. If I was an owner I’d be thinking you’ve had a lot of money for these players, you certainly don’t fancy them and now you want a lot of money for someone else.
“I think Manchester United are a little bit desperate at this present moment which is not like Manchester United and certainly not like Mourinho.”

Gail Davis has been stationed at the Emirates Stadium on Deadline Day. She’ll keep you across any last-minute business Arsenal may conduct, although things are rather quiet at the moment...

06:25

‘UNITED MUST STRENGTHEN’

Former Liverpool and Blackburn full-back Stephen Warnock says he expects Manchester United to have a busy transfer deadline day, with Jose Mourinho looking to bring in at least one new centre-back.
Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford, and Warnock wouldn’t be surprised if more than one comes through the door in the next 10 hours.
Warnock told Sky Sports News: “Maguire is not only a very good ball player, but he’s also a very good defender. He proved that during the World Cup.
"It wouldn’t surprise me if they try to bring two of them in. They do need to get stronger, and I’m sure they’ll do that today.”

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT MAN UTD?

Fraser Dainton is live at Manchester United's Carrington training ground for Sky Sports News, with expectations of moves for the club by the end of the window - or you can be sure Jose Mourinho won't be happy.
He said: "There are three names in particular that have been mentioned consistently as Manchester United try to get a defender in. First of all, we heard a lot about Jerome Boateng yesterday, although we understand that would only be on a loan deal.
"Another is Toby Alderweireld at Spurs, who has been consistently linked as well. Money is the stumbling block there. Harry Maguire is another player Manchester United are very interested in. We understand two bids have been made for the Leicester defender, the second for around £60m.
"Money is available for Jose Mourinho to spend, but the club are not keen, we understand, to be spending over the odds for particular players. It could well be a game of cat and mouse now."
06:13

MORE ON SPURS RADAR?

It's not just Grealish who seems to be interesting Spurs though. Tottenham and Arsenal have both been reportedly looking to bring Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge to London, with the player's agent said to be in the capital finalising a move.
The 20-year-old, who plays for Genk, made his Norway debut in 2017 and is in the mould of current Spurs midfielder Mousa Dembele - who could yet leave the club today.
06:09

SPURS LATEST

Sky Sports News' Paul Gilmour is live at Spurs' Enfield training ground with the latest on what they could be up to today - and there's a familiar name they are still in the market for.
He said "The man near the top of Spurs’ list is Jack Grealish. Aston Villa have told Tottenham that he is not for sale, but we understand the player wants to go.
"Add into the mix, Aston Villa have signed a similar type of player to Grealish in John McGinn from Hibernian. All of a sudden it means it has still got the potential to go through today. Certainly talks will continue over the next few hours or so."

SCHALKE INTERESTED IN ROSE LOAN

Schalke are in talks with Tottenham over the loan signing of Danny Rose, according to Sky sources.
Along with Schalke, Rose has been given permission to talk to other unnamed clubs over a season-long loan move.
Earlier this month, Sky sources reported Tottenham would listen to offers for Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele.
Rose, 28, has faced an uncertain future since criticising the club's ambition and wage structure in 2017, for which he subsequently apologised.

BIG NEWS FROM BURNLEY?

Burnley have been tweeting early this morning as the clock ticks down on Deadline Day - but it's ahead of their first overseas European game since 1967 at the Fatih Terim Stadium against Istanbul Basaksehir.

COURTOIS AGREES REAL MOVE

Thibaut Courtois is getting his dream move to Real Madrid in a deal that will see Mateo Kovacic join Chelsea on loan for the season.
The Belgium international only had a year left on his deal at Stamford Bridge and has been absent from training this week as he looked to push through before the transfer window ended.
Courtois' move to Real Madrid is now only formalities away from completion.
A statement from Chelsea read: "Chelsea and Real Madrid have tonight agreed terms for the permanent transfer of Thibaut Courtois subject to the agreement of personal terms and passing a medical.
"Subject to the completion of the deal Mateo Kovacic will join the Blues on a season-long loan."
05:17

BIG MOVERS TODAY?

There's going to be some big money spent on Deadline Day this year, if the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and others are going to get what they want - here's some of the biggest possible moves which are in the offing:
Those are the big ones, but there's a whole host of other names in the mix - and, I'm sure, more to follow out of the ether.
  • Harry Maguire - Manchester United have retained an interest in the England defender for some while, and had a £60m bid turned down already. Leicester, however, remain determined that even a world-record bid will not be enough to tempt them to sell.
  • Jerome Boateng - if that one doesn't come off, Manchester United are also keen on Jerome Boateng, with Sky sources telling us the Germany defender would like to move to Old Trafford.
  • Danny Rose - Tottenham are in talks with Schalke over a possible loan move for the England left-back, with other clubs also expressing an interest in a temporary move.
  • Jack Grealish - Spurs have had a bid rejected for the Aston Villa midfielder, but sources have told Sky Sports he is "very disappointed" he is not allowed to move - having been promised he could leave at the start of the Transfer Window, before Villa's new owners took over.
05:16

CHELSEA SIGN KEPA

There’s only one place to start this morning and that’s with a look back at Chelsea’s historic capture of Kepa Arrizabalaga yesterday.
The Blues broke the world transfer record for a goalkeeper, agreeing a £71.6m deal with Athletic Bilbao for the 23-year-old Spain international.
The fee surpasses the previous record, which was set only last month when Liverpool paid £66m for Allison.
Chelsea have put their faith in Kepa, handing him a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge through to 2025.
05:08

BRYAN EYES PREM OVER VILLA

More on that story involving Bristol City's Joe Bryan, whois having a medical at Fulham this morning, according to Sky sources.
The Whites have agreed a deal with the Robins to sign the 24-year-old left-back - who looks like he could turn his back on Aston Villa, who agreed a fee for him yesterday.
Bryan is understood to prefer a move to the Premier League.
